How to calculate fixed deposit interest?
Most Singapore fixed deposits pay simple interest. The formula is:
Interest = Deposit × Rate (%) × Months ÷ 1,200
- Deposit amount: the sum you place, in S$.
- Tenure: how many months you lock it in.
- Interest rate: the bank’s annual rate (% p.a.).
Example: S$20,000 for 6 months at 1.80% p.a. earns S$20,000 × 1.80 × 6 ÷ 1,200 = S$180. Your total at maturity is S$20,180.
Dividing by 1,200 turns the yearly percentage into a monthly fraction (12 months × 100).
How to calculate fixed deposit interest rate
If you already know the interest earned and want the rate, reverse the formula:
Rate (% p.a.) = Interest × 1,200 ÷ (Deposit × Months)
Example: You earned S$180 on S$20,000 over 6 months: 180 × 1,200 ÷ (20,000 × 6) = 1.80% p.a.
Use this to check what a promotion really pays, or to compare offers with different tenures.
Fixed deposit calculator FAQs
Is this FD calculator accurate for Singapore banks?
It gives a close estimate using simple interest, which is how most Singapore FDs are quoted. Your actual payout can differ depending on whether interest is paid monthly, annually or at maturity, early withdrawal terms, and the rate at renewal. Always confirm with the bank.
What is the difference between a bank and a finance company FD?
Finance companies often advertise higher FD rates than banks, but you should check each one’s terms, minimum deposit and deposit insurance coverage.
Can I use this calculator for any tenure?
Yes. Enter the number of months. For a 12-month FD, enter 12. For 18 months, enter 18.
